How to Iron on Your Patches

If you recently purchased one of our iron-on EDM patches, you might be a little confused as to how you can get it to stick to your favorite jacket, backpack, fanny pack, or other fabric. This guide will teach you how to reading apply your iron on patch to any fabric. 

To iron on a patch, first prepare your garment by laying it flat on a hard surface. Then, position the patch on the desired location and cover it with a thin cloth or parchment paper to protect it from direct heat. Iron the patch for 10-30 seconds, applying firm pressure. Allow the patch to cool completely before turning the garment inside out and repeating the ironing process on the back of the patch for another 30 seconds.

1. Preparation:

  • Clean the garment: Ensure the garment is freshly laundered and free of any wrinkles. 
  • Lay it flat: Place the garment on a hard, heat-resistant surface like an ironing board. 
  • Set the iron: Set the iron to the appropriate heat setting for the fabric, typically cotton or 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 
  • Turn off steam: Make sure the iron is set to dry heat with no water in the tank. 

2. Applying the patch:

  • Position the patch:

Place the patch on the desired location of the garment, with the adhesive side facing up. 

  • Protect the patch:

Cover the patch with a thin cloth or parchment paper to prevent direct heat from burning the fabric. 

  • Iron firmly:

Iron the patch for 10-30 seconds, using a slow circular motion and applying firm, consistent pressure. 

  • Allow to cool:

Let the patch cool down completely before proceeding to the next step. 

3. Reinforcement:

  • Turn inside out: Turn the garment inside out.
  • Iron the back: Iron the back of the patch for another 30 seconds to reinforce the bond.
  • Cool down again: Allow the patch to cool completely one last time. 

Tips for success:

  • Check the edges:

Once cool, check the edges of the patch to ensure they are securely attached. If any edges are lifting, repeat the ironing process. 

  • Use a pressing cloth:

A pressing cloth can help prevent heat from damaging the garment's fabric. 

  • Preheat the area:

Consider preheating the area where the patch will be placed before positioning the patch. 

  • Consider sewing:

For added durability, you can sew the edges of the patch to the garment after ironing, especially if the garment will be washed frequently. 

  • Follow patch instructions:

Always refer to the instructions on the patch packaging for specific heat and pressure recommendations.
